Top tips for simple and practical ways to save money while maintaining a fulfilling and joyful life.

1. Create a Budget

Developing a budget is the cornerstone of successful money-saving strategies. You can’t save if you don’t know how much you’re earning or spending. I know lots of people who earn a great salary, but live paycheck to paycheck. Why? Because they don’t are afraid to track their income and expenses, Living Richly is so much more than making money. It’s about learning how to manage and grow it. The first step to multiplying your money is to count it. Trust in the words of world renowned management consultant, Peter Drucker when he famously stated “you can’t manage what you can’t measure.” Pete was on to something here. How on earth can you make more, save more, invest more, have more, if you’ve no idea what more is, or less is, or enough is?

Try our budget template to kickstart your journey. It has a handy dashboard that allows you to quickly see where you need to switch gears to stay on track.

2. Practice Mindful Spending

Before making a purchase, pause and consider if it aligns with your values and brings genuine joy. Mindful spending prevents impulsive purchases and ensures that your money is used for things that truly matter to you. The budget you established will allow you to allocate specific amounts for necessities, savings and of course, discretionary “optional yet really, really important for happiness” spending. Your budget will give you a clear picture of your finances so you can see what areas you could cut back so as to keep more discretionary spending (social outings, entertainment, whatever is your jam is. Leave money leftover for the things experiences that make you smile!

3. Embrace the 30-Day Rule

For non-essential purchases, employ the 30-day rule. Wait for 30 days before buying the item. Often, you’ll find that the initial impulse to buy fades, and you’ll save money by not making unnecessary purchases.

4. Cook at Home

Eating out can be costly, especially when done frequently. Opt to cook at home more often, exploring new recipes and enjoying quality time with loved ones while saving money. In my family, rather than ordering pizza, we enjoy the art of making them. The ingredients are cheaper than pizza delivery, we have fun in the process and everyone gets a pizza with their specific favorite toppings! Messier, but delicious.

5. Utilize Coupons and Discounts

Take advantage of coupons, discount codes, and loyalty programs when shopping for essentials or indulging in occasional treats. These small savings add up over time. I joined Rakuten a few years ago and have earned $397 to date, for doing what I would normally do! The ROI on the 5 minute sign up has been incredible!

6. Reduce Utility Expenses

Be conscious of your energy usage at home. Turn off lights when not in use, unplug devices, and consider energy-efficient options to reduce utility bills. I have a magnet from my utility provider on my fridge to remind when the peak hours when I need to minimize my energy usage.

7. Reevaluate Subscriptions

Review your subscriptions and memberships regularly. Cancel any that you no longer use or find value in, freeing up funds for more meaningful expenses. I do this at least once a year, sometimes more as at times those free trials have turned into a paid subscription without you noticing.

8. Opt for Secondhand and Thrift Shopping

Consider buying secondhand items or shopping at thrift stores for clothing, furniture, and household items. You can find quality items at a fraction of the cost of new ones. My daughter and I love the local kid’s second hand shops in town. She usually ends up with big brand name items, that we’d never pay full price for, and they are as good as new! We paid $250 for our dining room table 12 years ago at a consignment store and it’s still going strong!.

9. Use Cash Back and Rewards Programs

Utilize cash back and rewards programs offered by credit cards or online shopping platforms. Accumulate rewards points and cash back, which can be used for future purchases or to reduce expenses. Be careful here and only do this if your cards are on automatic full payment and you are not at risk of having insufficient funds in your account.

10. Practice Gratitude

Cultivate a sense of gratitude for what you already have. Appreciating your belongings and experiences can reduce the desire for excessive spending and lead to a more content and fulfilled life. In my house, we have a gratitude jar which everyone can write a note about something that makes them happy and thankful, and drop it in. On special occasions, holidays, birthdays, etc, we open it up and read aloud and remind ourselves how blessed we are.

Remember…

Saving money doesn’t have to involve significant sacrifices or compromising your happiness. By adopting simple and mindful practices, you can effectively save money while still enjoying a rich and fulfilling life.

Creating a budget, being mindful of spending, and taking advantage of discounts and rewards are just a few ways to reduce expenses without feeling deprived. Embrace a frugal mindset and prioritize spending on experiences and items that truly bring joy and meaning to your life. You CAN achieve your financial goals and Find Happy!
